How to Connect Ahrefs to Claude (and What It Can't Do)

Ahrefs has graduated from community wrappers to an approved app in Claude’s connector directory. The listing is backed by the official Ahrefs MCP server — open-sourced at ahrefs/ahrefs-mcp-server and hosted at api.ahrefs.com/mcp/mcp — and it comes included with every paid Ahrefs plan, Lite through Enterprise, no separate API subscription. Turn it on and Claude can query Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Rank Tracker, and Brand Radar mid-conversation. What hasn’t changed: connectors require a paid Claude plan, every request spends Ahrefs API units, and Claude only speaks when spoken to — no scheduled rank checks, no backlink alerts.

What Claude can pull once Ahrefs is connected

Everything routes through the same data your Ahrefs dashboard shows, so the questions sound like an SEO talking to a colleague rather than someone filling in API parameters:

  • “Which referring domains did competitor.com pick up in June that we don’t have? Sort by domain rating.”
  • “In my Rank Tracker project, which tracked keywords slipped out of the top 3 this week?”
  • “Give me keyword ideas around ‘meeting scheduler’ with traffic potential above 500 and KD under 20.”

Claude picks the MCP tool that fits (a Site Explorer referring-domains call, say), runs it, and then reasons over the rows — comparing link profiles, clustering keywords, drafting the outreach shortlist. Brand Radar queries extend that to AI-search visibility: how often your brand surfaces in LLM answers versus competitors.

Two ways to switch it on

The directory path: open Claude’s connector settings, find Ahrefs among the approved connectors, hit Connect, and complete the OAuth sign-in to your Ahrefs workspace. That’s the route Ahrefs recommends.

The manual path, for Claude Code or a desktop config: generate an MCP key under Ahrefs Account Settings and point your client at https://api.ahrefs.com/mcp/mcp with the key as a bearer token — Ahrefs’ setup docs walk through both. Either way you’ll choose a permission mode: “always ask” before each query, or unsupervised.

Both routes assume a paid Claude plan on one side and a paid Ahrefs plan on the other.

API units set the ceiling

The MCP meters usage the way the Ahrefs API does. Your plan tier decides the monthly unit budget — roughly 100,000 units on Lite scaling to 2 million on Enterprise — and caps rows per request, from about 100 rows on the entry tier upward. In day-to-day terms: asking Claude to eyeball a competitor’s top pages is cheap; asking it to chew through the full backlink index for a DR 80 domain will chew through your allowance instead. Watch unit spend during your first week.

The second ceiling is the one every Claude connector shares. There’s no “check my rankings every Monday” and no “ping me if we lose a link from a DR 70+ site.” A lost backlink that Ahrefs’ crawler spots on Tuesday waits silently until you next open a chat and think to ask. Claude answers questions; it doesn’t keep watch.

Standing reports are a different job: Carly

An SEO lead usually wants two rhythms that Ahrefs-in-a-chat can’t provide: the scheduled digest and the exception alert. Carly is an AI executive assistant built around exactly those rhythms — workflows that fire on schedules and events, running in the cloud whether or not anyone is at a keyboard.

Tell it, in plain English, “every Monday, pull ranking movement and lost backlinks from Ahrefs and email the summary to the growth channel.” Carly interviews you about the details, then assembles the workflow with you. From there it pulls the data, writes the digest, and sends the email through Gmail or Outlook — a real send, with the CSV attached if you want it — or updates a sheet, or opens a task. No MCP server to configure, no unit babysitting from inside a chat window.

AI agents start at $35/month; steps in a workflow that don’t use AI run free and unlimited. Ahrefs sits among the 200+ tools Carly connects to — see the Ahrefs integration page and the wider integrations catalog.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Claude integrate with Ahrefs?

Yes — natively now. Ahrefs is an approved app in Claude’s connector directory, built on the official Ahrefs MCP server at api.ahrefs.com/mcp/mcp. Connect it with OAuth on a paid Claude plan and Claude can query Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Rank Tracker, and Brand Radar inside a chat.

Do I need an Ahrefs API subscription for the MCP?

No. The MCP is included with all paid Ahrefs plans — Lite, Standard, Advanced, and Enterprise. Your tier sets the metering (monthly API units from roughly 100k up to 2M, plus per-request row caps) rather than requiring a separate API contract.

Can Claude track my rankings automatically each week?

It can’t. Connectors respond only inside conversations you start, with no schedules or event hooks — weekly rank monitoring would mean you opening a chat weekly. Scheduled digests and drop alerts are what a trigger-based agent like Carly exists for.

Can I use the Ahrefs MCP outside claude.ai?

Yes. Any MCP-capable client works: add https://api.ahrefs.com/mcp/mcp to Claude Code or your desktop configuration, authenticated with an MCP key generated in your Ahrefs account settings.

How would Carly handle Ahrefs reporting?

You describe the rhythm — “Monday keyword movement to my inbox, immediate email if we lose a big referring domain” — and Carly builds the workflow and runs it in the cloud. AI agents start at $35/month, with non-AI workflow steps free and unlimited.

See what people say

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.

Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.

On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
