Can Claude Delete Emails? (2026)

Not in Gmail, and only with an administrator’s help in Outlook. Anthropic’s list of what the Gmail connector does covers searching, reading, drafting, sending, and organizing with labels. Moving mail to the trash isn’t on it. Claude can find every newsletter you never open. It just can’t throw them away.

Add the Carly connector and Claude can. Carly trashes mail across all of your Gmail and Outlook accounts at once, and you can set it up from Claude to keep doing it as new mail lands.

What Claude can do with your email today

Connect Gmail and Claude can, per Anthropic’s Google Workspace connector guide:

  • Search and read with plain-English queries.
  • Draft replies with context from the thread.
  • Send, reply and forward, asking your approval before each one by default.
  • Manage labels and threads.
  • List your saved drafts.

Deleting isn’t there, and neither is emptying spam or trash. The same guide warns that “performance may vary for large mailboxes” and that rate limits follow Google’s API quotas, which matters when the job is clearing 4,000 promotional emails.

On the Microsoft side, the Microsoft 365 connector reads mail by default. Its write tools, which include moving and labeling messages, stay off until a Microsoft Entra administrator consents and your Claude organization enables them. Personal Outlook.com accounts can’t connect at all.

Send mail, manage drafts and calendar events, update mailbox settings, create and update OneDrive and SharePoint files, post in Teams. That is the write list on Claude's Microsoft 365 connector, and it comes with three caveats: blocked by default for older organizations, no attachments, and per-user limits on sends. Carly carries the same actions across all of your accounts, attachments included.

Why “just ask Claude” doesn’t clean an inbox

Even where Claude can act on a message, it acts inside a chat you opened, a few messages at a time, with an approval click on each. That’s fine for one thread. It’s not how anyone empties a backlog, and it does nothing about tomorrow’s mail.

Give Claude's scheduled tasks a time and they will run. Give them something that just happened and they will not. ChatGPT goes further, but only on web and mobile, and only for apps whose plugin supports events: OpenAI documents Gmail, Slack and GitHub and has not named the rest. A lead moving stage, a form landing, an invoice clearing: neither one has a published way to start on it. Carly starts on all of it.

How to delete emails with Claude and Carly

  1. Connect your inboxes. Add every Gmail and Outlook account at carlyassistant.com/integrations, personal and work.
  2. Add Carly to Claude. Click Get the Carly connector, then Connect.
  3. Ask across all of them at once:

Trash every promotional email older than 30 days in all my inboxes, and tell me how many you removed from each.

Carly moves mail to Trash, not into the void. Gmail keeps trashed mail for 30 days before deleting it for good, so a mistake is a click away from fixed.

Keep it clean with rules that run on their own

Set these up once from Claude, and they run as free Zapier-style workflows with your laptop closed:

  • Trash promotional email as it arrives. Marketing blasts leave your inbox the moment they land, and Carly can unsubscribe you while it’s there.
  • Clear out automated notifications after a week. Shipping updates, login alerts and calendar receipts go once they’re stale.
  • Sort everything else. Each new message gets one of the Gmail labels or Outlook folders you already use, so what’s left is what needs you. See how triage works.
  • Text you when something important lands. Cleaning up shouldn’t mean missing the email that matters. Set up urgent-email texts.

Carly follows your rules the same way every time, connects to thousands of apps beyond email, and runs the same from ChatGPT, Grok Bot, Meta Muse and Perplexity. Free Zapier-style workflows; AI agents from $35/month. Get started.

Frequently asked questions

Can Claude delete emails in Gmail?

Not with the built-in Gmail connector. It can search, read, draft, send and manage labels, but trashing isn’t one of its listed abilities. With the Carly connector added, Claude can trash Gmail messages in bulk.

Can Claude delete emails in Outlook?

Only after a Microsoft Entra administrator enables the Microsoft 365 connector’s write tools, and only for work accounts. Carly trashes Outlook mail in any account you connect, personal or work.

Can Claude bulk delete emails?

Not on its own. Claude works a few messages at a time inside a chat. Carly clears thousands across every inbox in one request.

Can Claude delete emails automatically?

No. Claude has no trigger that fires when mail arrives. Carly’s workflows trash promotions and stale notifications the moment they land, and you set them up from inside Claude.

Is it safe to let an AI delete my email?

Carly moves mail to Trash, where Gmail keeps it for 30 days, and you choose the rules. Start with promotions and old notifications, check the count Carly reports, then widen it.

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.

Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.

On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
