Two Google Drive accounts feeding into a single ChatGPT conversation

How to Connect Multiple Google Drive Accounts to ChatGPT

ChatGPT’s Google Drive connector authorizes one Google account. OpenAI describes it as reaching content from the Google account you choose to connect, and connecting a second one replaces the first. So personal Drive and work Drive cannot both answer the same question natively.

Here is what the connector does, why the obvious workarounds fail, and how to get both Drives into one chat.

What the Drive connector does with one account

ChatGPT can search your Drive by description rather than folder path, read and summarize documents, and answer across several files at once with the source cited. The synced connector indexes selected content so search-style questions come back quickly.

The scope has widened recently, so it is worth being precise. OpenAI now documents Google Drive actions that create, update, share, move, upload, copy, or delete Drive-family files, and the standalone Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides apps have been folded into the Drive app. Those actions are on by default on Business and off by default on Enterprise and Edu until an admin enables them.

What has not changed is the trigger side. Nothing in your Drive starts a task. A Scheduled Task can look on a timer; no file arrival starts anything.

None of the major assistants let one connector carry two accounts at once. ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini all authorize a single Google identity per connection, and the documented way to reach the other one is to disconnect and sign in again. A question that spans both inboxes cannot be answered in a single conversation.

Why account switching is not the answer

OpenAI’s account switcher keeps several ChatGPT logins available, but their chats, files, memory, and connected apps stay separate. That is the design. It means a second Google Drive lives in a second ChatGPT session, which is exactly the thing you were trying to avoid.

Sharing folders between your own Google accounts is the other common attempt. It makes specific files visible through one identity, and then you maintain the sharing by hand forever as folders change.

1. Give each Google identity a role

All addresses below are fictional:

AccountRole
fictional.marcus.hale@gmail.comPersonal
fictional.marcus.hale@ford.comMain Company
fictional.marcus.hale@cisco.comClient

Roles work for ordinary questions. Use the full address whenever something writes.

2. Connect the first Drive to Carly

  1. Sign in at carlyassistant.com.
  2. Open carlyassistant.com/integrations.
  3. Find Google Drive and click Connect.
  4. Choose the first Google account.
  5. Review and approve access.
  6. Confirm the connected address.

On a managed Google Workspace account, an administrator may need to approve the connection. Ask early rather than at the end.

3. Add the other Drives

  1. Return to the integrations page.
  2. Select Google Drive → Connect again.
  3. Choose Use another account if Google preselects the first login.
  4. Sign in to the next Google identity.
  5. Complete authorization and verify the address.

Each Drive stays its own account with its own folders and permissions.

4. Add Carly to ChatGPT

  1. Open Plugins in the ChatGPT sidebar.
  2. Click +.
  3. Paste https://carlyassistant.com/mcp/.
  4. Continue to authorization.
  5. Sign in to the Carly workspace holding the Drives.

OpenAI’s Apps in ChatGPT guide explains that plugins are the discovery surface while apps and connectors supply the underlying tools. If + is greyed out, a workspace administrator may need to enable plugins.

5. Keep approval on while you test

Open your profile menu, then Settings → Apps, and leave the approval preference enabled for changes. Searches still run freely; anything that writes to a Drive pauses for review, which makes the target account visible before it acts.

6. Test each Drive read-only

In the Personal Drive, list the five most recently modified files and their folders. Do not change anything.

In fictional.marcus.hale@ford.com, find the latest version of the pricing deck and tell me when it was last edited. Read only.

Then the cross-account question:

Search Personal and Main Company for files mentioning “renewal” from the last 90 days. Include the source account in every row.

7. Reuse this routing prompt

Treat fictional.marcus.hale@gmail.com as Personal, fictional.marcus.hale@ford.com as Main Company, and fictional.marcus.hale@cisco.com as Client. Always state the target account before saving, filing, or moving anything. Wait for approval on any write.

Then name the target per action:

Save that summary into the Client Drive under Contracts.

Move the signed PDF into Main Company, in the folder for this quarter.

Native connector versus Carly in ChatGPT

NeedChatGPT’s Drive connectorCarly plugin
Search one Google DriveYesYes
Hold several Google identities at onceNoYes
Compare files across two Drives in one chatNoYes
Upload, move, rename, or organizeYes, with approvalYes
Act when a file arrivesNoYes
Run the same work outside ChatGPTNoYes

The account line is the one people underestimate, now that the write limit has gone. Finding the contract is the easy half. Filing it against the right client, in the right Drive, logging it, and telling the deal owner is the half that repeats fifty times a month, and it needs both a trigger and more than one account.

Carly fires on the event itself and runs in the cloud, so an attachment that arrives overnight is saved to the right folder in the right Drive and logged before you open your laptop. Free Zapier-style workflows; AI agents from $35/month. Connect it on the integrations page, or start with Google Drive.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT connect two Google Drive accounts natively?

No. The Google connector reaches the one Google account you connect, and connecting another replaces it.

Does the ChatGPT account switcher give me two Drives?

Not usefully. Each ChatGPT login keeps its own connected apps, so you get two sessions rather than one assistant that can see both Drives.

Can ChatGPT organize files in Drive?

Yes. Drive actions create, update, share, move, upload, copy, and delete files, with approval prompted for anything meaningful. They are on by default on Business and enabled by an admin on Enterprise and Edu.

Does this copy files between accounts?

No. The Drives stay separate. Carly routes each request to the account you name.

See what people say

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.

Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.

On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
