Connect Multiple Google Drive Accounts to ChatGPT Work
ChatGPT Work gives you two ways to connect Google Drive, and neither one holds a second Google account. The self-service path authorizes one identity per user. The admin-managed path authenticates a service account against a single Google Workspace domain, and it will not accept a gmail.com address at all.
Something worth knowing first, because it changes what the limit actually costs you.
The read-only limit is gone. The one-account limit is not.
Drive used to be a pure context source. That changed. OpenAI now documents Google Drive actions that create, update, share, move, upload, copy, or delete Drive-family files, and the standalone Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides apps have been folded into the Drive app rather than living separately in the directory.
Those actions are on by default on Business and off by default on Enterprise and Edu until an admin turns them on. After enablement your Google Workspace admin may need to re-authorize the updated Drive scopes before anyone can use them.
So a ChatGPT Work run can genuinely file a document now. It just has to be in the one Drive you connected.
The two setups, and where each one stops
| Self-service | Admin-managed | |
|---|---|---|
| Who authenticates | Each user, over OAuth | A Google service account |
| Google accounts per user | One | One domain, centrally |
Personal gmail.com Drive | One, if it is the one you connect | Not supported at all |
| Second Workspace or client tenant | No | No |
| End-user setup after rollout | Sign in | None |
The admin path is the stricter of the two in a way that surprises people. Setup asks for your organization’s primary domain, and OpenAI states plainly that it must be a Google Workspace domain: gmail.com and googlemail.com are not supported. An admin can shape which shared drives are in scope, including or excluding specific drive IDs, but that is a lever inside one domain, not a way to reach a second one.
None of the major assistants let one connector carry two accounts at once. ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini all authorize a single Google identity per connection, and the documented way to reach the other one is to disconnect and sign in again. A question that spans both inboxes cannot be answered in a single conversation.
Who actually hits this
Consultants with a client Workspace alongside their own. Anyone whose personal Drive holds the tax documents and whose work Drive holds everything else. Fractional executives carrying two or three Workspaces at once. In each case one question spans two Drives and the connector answers for one.
The ChatGPT account switcher is the usual first attempt and it does not help: each login keeps its own connected apps by design, so a second Drive means a second session.
1. Sort your Drives by Google identity
All addresses below are fictional.
| Drive | Google account | Native path |
|---|---|---|
| Company files | fictional.priya.raman@ford.com | Yes, connected identity |
| Shared team drive | fictional.priya.raman@ford.com | Yes, if in the sync scope |
| Personal | fictional.priya.raman@gmail.com | No, second identity |
| Client delivery | fictional.priya.raman@cisco.com | No, third identity |
Rows one and two are a setup question. Rows three and four are the reason for the rest of this guide.
2. Connect Google Drive in ChatGPT Work
- Select your profile icon, then Settings → Apps.
- Open the app directory and find Google Drive.
- Click Connect and sign in with your primary Google account.
- Approve the scopes on the Google consent screen.
- Ask for a recent file to confirm it works.
If your workspace is on the admin-managed setup, there is nothing for you to do here. Files and permissions sync centrally and the app is simply available.
3. Connect each Google identity to Carly
- Sign in at carlyassistant.com.
- Open carlyassistant.com/integrations.
- Find Google Drive and click Connect.
- Authorize the first Google account.
- Repeat for every additional identity, choosing Use another account when Google preselects the first login.
- Verify the address after each authorization before adding the next.
A managed Workspace may need administrator approval, and each Workspace approves independently. On a client tenant where you are not the administrator, ask early. That is usually the long pole.
4. Add Carly to ChatGPT Work
- Open Plugins in the ChatGPT sidebar.
- Click +.
- Paste
https://carlyassistant.com/mcp/. - Authorize and sign in to the Carly workspace holding the Drives.
If + is disabled, a workspace administrator needs to enable plugins. Admins manage plugin installation under Workspace settings → Plugins, and each underlying app’s permissions from the plugin configuration or Workspace settings → Apps.
5. Keep approval on while testing
Open Settings → Apps and leave the app permission at Important actions, the default, or tighten it to Any changes while you are still checking routing. Reads run automatically; uploading a file, or moving or renaming one in cloud storage, counts as an important action and pauses for review. That pause is what makes the target Drive visible before anything writes.
6. Test each Drive read-only
One account per prompt until the source is reported correctly every time.
In the Company files Drive, list the five most recently modified documents and their folders. Do not change anything.
In
fictional.priya.raman@gmail.com, find the most recent scanned receipt and tell me its date. Read only.
Then the cross-account question that was not possible before:
Search Company files and Client delivery for documents mentioning “statement of work” from the last 90 days. Show the source account in every row.
7. Reuse this routing prompt
Treat
fictional.priya.raman@ford.comas Company,fictional.priya.raman@gmail.comas Personal, andfictional.priya.raman@cisco.comas Client. Always state the target account before creating, moving, uploading, or deleting anything. Wait for approval on any write.
Then name the target on each action:
Save that summary into the Client Drive under Contracts.
Copy the signed PDF into Company files, in this quarter’s folder, and leave the original where it is.
Native app versus Carly in ChatGPT Work
| Need | Google Drive app | Carly plugin |
|---|---|---|
| Search one Google Drive | Yes | Yes |
| Create, move, or upload files | Yes, with approval | Yes |
| Hold several Google identities at once | No | Yes |
Reach a personal gmail.com Drive on the admin setup | No | Yes |
| Compare files across two Drives in one run | No | Yes |
| Act when a file arrives | No | Yes |
| Run the same work outside ChatGPT | No | Yes |
The row that decides most setups is the last two. A Work run starts when you start it, or when a schedule starts it. Nothing begins because a file landed, so a contract dropping into the client Drive at 9pm waits for the next run or the next time somebody asks.
Carly fires on the event itself and runs in the cloud, holding every Drive while it does. Free Zapier-style workflows; AI agents from $35/month. Connect it on the integrations page, or start with Google Drive.
Quick fixes
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Drive actions are missing | On Enterprise or Edu an admin enables them; they are off by default |
| Users cannot connect after an upgrade | Re-authorize the updated Drive scopes in Google Workspace |
| The admin setup rejects your domain | It requires a Workspace domain; gmail.com is not supported |
| A shared drive is absent | Check the include and exclude list in the sync configuration |
| The same Google account connected twice | Remove the duplicate and reconnect with Use another account |
| The run uses the wrong Drive | Name the full address and require source attribution |
Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT Work connect two Google Drive accounts?
No. Self-service authorizes one Google identity per user, and the admin-managed setup runs against a single Workspace domain. A second account is a second connection.
Can ChatGPT Work write to Google Drive?
Yes. Drive actions can create, update, share, move, upload, copy, and delete Drive-family files. They are on by default on Business and off by default on Enterprise and Edu until an admin enables them.
Does the admin-managed setup cover personal Google accounts?
No. It requires a Google Workspace primary domain, and gmail.com and googlemail.com are not supported.
Do Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides connect separately?
Not any more. Those actions are now part of the Google Drive app, and the standalone apps have been removed from the directory.
Does a Work run start when a file lands in Drive?
No. Connectors feed a run that has already started, whether by you or by a schedule. There are no event triggers.

See what people say
"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.
Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.
On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
