Personal and work OneDrive accounts feeding into a single ChatGPT Work run

Connect Multiple OneDrive Accounts to ChatGPT Work

This is the one multi-account question in ChatGPT that has a partial yes. OneDrive arrives as two separate apps, one for personal Microsoft accounts and one for work or school, so a personal drive and a work drive can both be connected at the same time. What still does not work is two work tenants, which is what most people asking the question actually have.

The two apps

  • OneDrive for personal Microsoft accounts, covering an @outlook.com or @hotmail.com login and the files in that drive.
  • SharePoint and OneDrive for work or school, covering your Microsoft 365 tenant, your OneDrive for Business, and the SharePoint sites you can already open.

Because they are separate apps with separate authorizations, connecting one does not replace the other. That is one personal drive and one work drive. A second employer, a client tenant, or a third account has nowhere to go.

Where it stops: the second tenant

One work identity means one tenant. That is the wall for consultants, agencies, fractional executives, and anyone holding a guest account in a client’s Microsoft 365. Your company’s drive sits in one tenant, the client’s in another, and the app authorizes one.

The account switcher does not solve it either. Each ChatGPT login keeps its own connected apps by design, so a second tenant becomes a second session rather than one run that sees both.

What it can do once connected

The work or school side is documented around reading: the SharePoint app reads content and metadata for files and folders you can access and respects the permissions you already have, across .txt, .pdf, .docx, .pptx, .xlsx, and .csv. Admins control the rest from Workspace settings → Apps, where Action control allows every action, allows only read actions, or takes a custom set. They can also decide how actions added later are handled, so an app can gain a capability and still stay switched off until reviewed.

Two other things shape a ChatGPT Work rollout here:

An Entra administrator has to consent. Some actions in the Outlook Email, Outlook Calendar, Microsoft Teams, and SharePoint apps need Microsoft Graph permissions granted for the whole organization. The ChatGPT workspace owner and the Microsoft Entra administrator are often different people, which is worth discovering before you plan around it rather than after.

Nothing starts on its own. A workspace agent runs when you start it or when a schedule starts it. A file landing in a drive triggers nothing.

1. Sort your drives by account type

All addresses below are fictional.

DriveAccount typeNative path
Personal filesfictional.tom.eriksen@outlook.comYes, personal app
Company drivefictional.tom.eriksen@pepsi.comYes, work or school app
Client drivefictional.tom.eriksen@cisco.comNo, second tenant

The first two rows work today. The third is the reason for the rest of this guide.

2. Connect the personal OneDrive app

  1. Select your profile icon, then Settings → Apps.
  2. Find OneDrive for personal Microsoft accounts in the directory.
  3. Click Connect and sign in with the @outlook.com or @hotmail.com login.
  4. Approve access and confirm with a question about a file you know.

3. Connect the work or school app

  1. In the same directory, find SharePoint and OneDrive for work or school.
  2. Click Connect and sign in with the Microsoft 365 account.
  3. If you see a consent error, ask your Microsoft Entra administrator to grant the scopes for the organization.
  4. On Enterprise and Edu, an admin also enables the app before members can connect it.

Ask about a document in your OneDrive for Business to confirm the connection landed in the tenant you expected.

4. Connect each Microsoft identity to Carly

  1. Sign in at carlyassistant.com.
  2. Open carlyassistant.com/integrations.
  3. Find OneDrive and click Connect.
  4. Authorize the first Microsoft identity.
  5. Repeat for every additional tenant, choosing Use another account if Microsoft preselects the first login.
  6. Verify which tenant each connection landed in before adding the next.

If Microsoft shows Need admin approval, that tenant’s Entra administrator approves it. On a client tenant you do not control, start this early.

5. Add Carly to ChatGPT Work

  1. Open Plugins in the ChatGPT sidebar.
  2. Click +.
  3. Paste https://carlyassistant.com/mcp/.
  4. Authorize and sign in to the Carly workspace holding the drives.

If + is disabled, a workspace administrator enables plugins under Workspace settings → Plugins.

6. Keep approval on while testing

Leave the app permission at Important actions, the default, or tighten it to Any changes. Reads run automatically; uploading a file, or moving or renaming one in cloud storage, pauses for review. While you are still confirming which tenant a request lands in, that pause is the point.

7. Test each drive read-only

In my personal OneDrive, list the five most recently modified files. Do not change anything.

In the Company drive, find the current version of the onboarding deck and give me its last modified date. Read only.

Then the cross-tenant question:

Search the Company drive and the Client drive for files mentioning “renewal” in the last 90 days. Show the source tenant in every row.

8. Reuse this routing prompt

Treat fictional.tom.eriksen@outlook.com as Personal, fictional.tom.eriksen@pepsi.com as Company, and fictional.tom.eriksen@cisco.com as Client. Always state the target tenant before saving, filing, or moving anything. Wait for approval on any write.

Then name the target per action:

File that summary in the Client drive under this quarter’s folder.

Copy the signed order form into the Company drive and leave the original in place.

Native apps versus Carly in ChatGPT Work

Give the native apps credit for the row most assistants fail: personal and work together, genuinely, without a second session. The tenant row is where it ends, and it ends exactly where consulting and agency work begins.

Carly holds each tenant as its own named connection, reports which one every action came from, and fires when the file lands rather than when you ask. Free Zapier-style workflows; AI agents from $35/month. Connect it on the integrations page, or start with OneDrive.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT Work connect a personal and a work OneDrive at once?

Yes. They are separate apps with separate authorizations, so connecting one does not replace the other.

Can ChatGPT Work connect two work tenants?

No. The work or school app authorizes a single Microsoft identity, so a second tenant needs a second connection.

Can ChatGPT Work upload or move files in OneDrive for Business?

That depends on your admin. The app is documented around reading content and metadata, and admins use Action control to allow all actions, only read actions, or a custom set.

Who has to approve the connection?

Often two people. A ChatGPT workspace owner enables the app, and a Microsoft Entra administrator grants the Graph permissions for the organization.

Does a Work run start when a file lands?

No. Runs start from you or from a schedule. There are no event triggers on file activity.

See what people say

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.

Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.

On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
