Zoom Time Limits: How Long Meetings Can Last (2026)

If you’re on a free Zoom Basic account, every meeting ends after 40 minutes — even a 1-on-1 call. Paid plans stretch that to 30 hours per meeting. Here’s exactly how the limits work and how to get past the 40-minute cap.

The Limits at a Glance

Zoom Basic (free)

  • 40-minute limit on all meetings, including 1-on-1 calls (this changed in 2022 — solo calls used to be unlimited)
  • Up to 100 participants
  • No daily cap on the number of meetings you can start

Zoom Pro / Business (paid)

  • Up to 30 hours per meeting
  • Up to 100 participants (Pro); higher caps on Business and with add-ons

The 40-Minute Cap Applies to Everyone on the Call

On a Basic account, the 40-minute timer applies to any meeting with two or more people — there’s no longer an exception for one-on-one calls. A countdown appears near the end warning you the meeting is about to end. When the timer hits zero, the meeting closes for all participants.

The limit is set by the host’s plan. If a free user hosts, the 40-minute cap applies no matter who else is on the call. If a Pro or Business user hosts, everyone gets that host’s longer limit.

How to Get Around the Limit

  • Restart the meeting with the same link. There’s no daily cap on Basic, so you can immediately relaunch the same meeting and continue. Participants just rejoin.
  • Have a paid-account user host. Since the host’s plan sets the limit, asking a Pro/Business colleague to start (and host) the meeting gives everyone the 30-hour ceiling.
  • Upgrade to Pro. This removes the 40-minute cap and raises the per-meeting limit to 30 hours.
  • Add a Webinar or Large Meeting add-on if you also need to raise the participant cap beyond 100.

Troubleshooting

Does the 40-minute limit apply to 1-on-1 meetings?

Yes. Since 2022, free Basic accounts have a 40-minute cap on all meetings, including two-person calls.

How many times can I restart a free meeting?

There’s no daily limit on Basic — you can start a fresh 40-minute meeting as many times as you need.

Whose plan decides the limit?

The host’s. Whoever starts the meeting sets the time limit for everyone in it.

What’s the longest a paid Zoom meeting can run?

Up to 30 hours per meeting on Pro and Business plans.

"Before Carly, I relied on a Calendly link, but the whole process felt impersonal and not very professional. Carly changed that by handling all the back-and-forth, so I'm no longer stuck in endless email threads trying to line up schedules.

Now Carly reaches out to candidates, shares my real-time availability, lets them pick a slot, then sends a Zoom link and drops it straight into my calendar. She sends reminders to both of us before each call, which has significantly reduced no-shows and last-minute confusion.

On top of scheduling, Carly acts like a full executive assistant, sending me my schedule the night before so I can prepare for each call. It reminds me of the old x.ai assistant, but Carly is noticeably smarter, faster, and better suited to my healthcare recruitment business."
